#MA 3093

Founder of Neurosomatic Therapy

Director of Research

Paul St. John attended the University of Rochester, where he was certified by New York State in Radiological Technology. He was a combat medic in the Green Berets 5th Special Forces Group in Vietnam. While there he worked with the Montagnard Tribesman of the Central Highlands, where he learned to appreciate the wisdom and knowledge of healers from the Orient. He attended the American Institute of Massage Therapy in Gainesville, Florida, where the State of Florida licensed him as a massage therapist.

The Development of NST

Paul St. John was injured very seriously twice in his life, the last one being over 30 years ago, when he was in a serious car accident, leaving him in chronic debilitating pain. After going through four years of chiropractic, neurology, osteopathy, and even psychiatry, he had found no permanent relief from his pain. He then started studying pain mechanisms, spending many hours in medical libraries researching the functioning of the nervous system and the neurological laws that govern the workings of the body.

Through this research he found that most pain conditions stem from the muscular system. With this information he began to study his own body and the pain patterns developing from his injuries. He began teaching others to treat his tissues as he began to integrate the teachings of such notables as Marianno Racabado, P.T.; Janet Travell, M.D.; John Barnes, P.T.; Raymond Nimmo, D.C.; Dr. John Christopher; Dr. Bernard Jensen, and other orthodox and non-conventional teachers. From this research, he developed the St. John Method of Neuromuscular Therapy (NMT).

Sharing Neurosomatic Therapy with the World

In 1978 Paul began teaching seminars in Neuromuscular Therapy, St. John Method, for which he has authored several training manuals and Home Study Video Programs. The NMT seminars will benefit massage therapists, physical therapists, occupational therapists, dentists, nurses, chiropractors, speech therapists, podiatrists, and mental health counselors. The courses will add new dimensions to analytical and treatment skills.

In 1984 he started lecturing on the St. John Method of Neuromuscular Therapy. Some of these lectures include: Johns Hopkins, University of North Carolina, Kentucky Dental Society Convention, on posture and muscular spasms and how NMT was a significant piece of the puzzle to TMJ pain syndromes, Atlanta Cranio-Mandibular Society on the role of postural dysfunction in TMJ disorders, Duke University's Wellness Institute for a conference of medical professionals, Henry Ford Health Systems, on migraines.

A Thought Leader in Pain Management Techniques

Nationally and internationally acclaimed, Paul has also presented several lectures and workshops at the Physical Medicine Research Foundation Conventions in Toronto, Canada, which is a multi-disciplinary group that is working to forward the understanding and working together of the health care professions. He has also had the privilege of presenting several lectures before the American College for Advancement in Medicine, and the American Academy for Head, Neck, and Facial Pain. He has addressed AMTA Conventions, as well as the Institute for TemporoMandibular Regulation in Germany. In 2006 Paul was one of three Americans invited to present at the seventh annual World Congress on Posturology in Bucharest, Romania and was invited to speak again in 2008 in Sao Paolo, Brazil.

Acknowledgements and Awards

In 1987 he received the Massage Therapist of the Year Award from the Florida State Massage Therapy Association, and has been a featured speaker at the American Massage Therapy Association National Conventions, as well as many AMTA State Conventions. He held the position of consultant to the Indiana Pacers of the National Basketball Association for the treatment of soft tissue athletic injuries.
